Flint Springs Elementary Celebrates Pavilion Grand Opening at the Annual Blacktop Bash
September 12, 2024 – Huntington, IN – Flint Springs Elementary marked a special occasion during this year’s Blacktop Bash as the community gathered for the grand opening of the school's new pavilion. The event, which has become a beloved tradition, saw families enjoying an evening of games, music, and food while celebrating the 20th birthday of Flint Springs.
The new pavilion, which will serve as an outdoor classroom and gathering space, is the culmination of a yearlong effort to bring a shared vision to life. During the opening ceremony, Flint Springs Principal Bre Dyer reflected on the journey from concept to completion.
"Just one year ago, this current space was mounds of dirt as our metal playground was removed, and we only dreamt of having an outdoor classroom in its place," Dyer recalled. "When faced with a large quote of what an outdoor classroom, or pavilion, would cost, it seemed impossible that the dream would become reality."
Dyer extended her heartfelt thanks to key contributors who played instrumental roles in the project’s success. Megan Reckelhoff, a dedicated advocate for the idea, helped spearhead the fundraising efforts. "The dollars raised were an overwhelming example of the support and impact our community can have when we come together," Dyer shared. "I was humbled seeing our goals be met."
The pavilion project also benefited from a matching grant made possible through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority's Creating Places Program. In attendance for the event was Jacob Sipe, the Executive Director of the IHCDA. Dyer acknowledged his contribution, saying, "We appreciate you providing opportunities for schools like ours to receive matching funds."
The Community Foundation of Huntington County, which acted as the project’s fiscal sponsor, was also recognized for its unwavering support throughout the fundraising process. Dyer expressed special gratitude to Kyle Metzger of the Community Foundation, who was in attendance for the celebration. "Thank you, Kyle, for your guidance and encouragement throughout this journey," Dyer said.
Additionally, John Bostell of JFB Custom Designs was thanked for organizing and constructing the pavilion.
"Lastly, a large thank you to all of the names on this banner, as well as the teachers and students who contributed to the cause," Dyer said. "We are so excited to officially cut the ribbon and put the beautiful space to good use."
